The Brief
A recommendation had been made by The Friends of St George’s to improve the external signing of the Chapel. The brief was to improve the flow of visitors/tourists to the entrance to St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, as well as increase recognition of the Chapel identity within the Castle whilst being sympathetic to this famous heritage site.
Exposed Design Consultants graphic design and wayfinding background, along with the practical experience of the Chapel, was an ideal combination to address the brief.
The Solution
We carried out a wayfinding review and explored how signage could be successfully be integrated into the Grade 1 Scheduled environment of Windsor Castle.
The flow of tourists to Windsor Castle leads them to the first door to the Chapel which is, in fact, the exit. The entrance is not visible from this point and so signage was required to both highlight no entry and point in the direction of the entrance.
All signage was required to be totally removable for Royal occasions and events within the Castle.
Signs were created for the moveable barriers (hurdles) used at the exit location and new mini-totem signs were designed to work on the grass outside the Chapel. The signs were designed to be low profile, minimising their visual impact on the castle environment whilst also not imitating the style of the Chapel.
The design was simple, clean and communicative, with an uncluttered approach to information presentation.
An existing notice board in the entrance porch has been reworked to carry variable magnetic posters. This system enables strips to be overlaid for closures as well as update posters for special services, recitals and events.
All signage required approval from the Dean & Canons of Windsor, the Fabric Advisor Committee and Historic England.
The result is a signage scheme that has improved flow and increased visitor numbers, is both modern and classic, and which looks like it belongs.
